World can’t afford another crisis, says FO on Taiwan situation after Pelosi visit
ISLAMABAD: The world cannot afford another crisis that has negative consequences for global peace and the economy, the Foreign Office said in reaction to the evolving situation in the Taiwan Strait after US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to the region which sparked a rebuke from China.
“Pakistan reaffirms its strong commitment to ‘One-China’ Policy and firmly supports China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” the Foreign Office said in a statement.
Pelosi, second in line to the presidency, made headlines on Tuesday after becoming the highest-profile elected US official to visit Taiwan in 25 years. She told reporters that her delegation had come to Taiwan in “peace for the region,” defying warnings from China, which views the region as its territory.

Addressing parliament on Wednesday, Pelosi said that new US legislation aimed at strengthening the American chip industry to compete with China “offers greater opportunity for US-Taiwan economic cooperation.”
Reacting to the simmering situation, the FO said that the world was already reeling through a critical security situation due to the Ukraine conflict, with destabilising implications for international food and energy security.
Chinese leader Xi Jinping in a call with US President Joe Biden in July had warned against playing with fire over Taiwan. He had highlighting Beijing’s concerns about a possible visit to the Chinese-claimed island by the US House speaker.
“Pakistan strongly believes that inter-state relations should be based on mutual respect, non-interference in internal affairs, and peaceful resolution of issues by upholding principles of UN charter, international law and bilateral agreements,” the FO said.
China’s military announced joint air and sea drills near Taiwan and test launches of conventional missiles in the sea east of Taiwan shortly after Pelosi’s arrival, with Chinese state news agency Xinhua describing live-fire drills and other exercises around Taiwan from Thursday to Sunday.
“Certain US politicians care about nothing but selfish gains and openly play with fire on the Taiwan question,” Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi was quoted as saying in a tweet by foreign ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying.
“Making themselves an enemy of the 1.4 billion Chinese people will not end up well. Acting like a bully in front of the whole world will only make everyone see that the US is the biggest danger to world peace,” it added.
