Google is enhancing Android’s security and privacy features in the upcoming Android 15, introducing AI-based malicious app detection, improved cellular network defenses, and significant updates to the Google Play Store to narrow the gap with Apple’s iPhone.

One notable trend has been the removal of lower-quality apps from the Play Store. This initiative not only enhances the user experience but also targets “shell apps” that serve as vehicles for malware. The danger often lies not in the app itseitself in what it downloads onto a device after installation.

App security has long been a critical challenge for Google, particularly regarding the risks associated with sideloading apps. Although Play Protect has expanded its capabilities to secure apps from various sources, the Play Store itself remains vulnerable to attacks. This ongoing battle between Google and malware developers has led to increasing sophistication on both sides.

According to Android Authority, the Play Store may soon warned users if an app is deemed low quality based on metrics such as frequent uninstalls, limited user data, or a small active user base.

These cautionary messages will likely appear on the app’s details page rather than as alerts before downloading, allowing users to make more informed decisions. While this approach is more conservative, it reflects an effort to utilize data analytics in assessing app quality and safety.

Experts suggested that Google should establish clearer definitions of what constitutes a high-quality app, emphasizing that such apps should deliver real value, be enjoyable to use, and be designed with safety in mind.

As these updates roll out, users are advised to exercise caution when installing apps flagged as low quality. With these enhancements and a broader crackdown on sideloading by both Google and Samsung, the security landscape for Android is evolving, though experts note that further improvements are still needed to match the security standards of iPhone.

Earlier this year, a significant purge of such apps began, resulting in a substantial reduction in the number of available applications. Recent insights from a pre-release Play Store APK teardown indicate that further enhancements are forthcoming.
