Karachi fire continues to rage for third day
A massive fire that broke out during a boring operation on the night between Friday and Saturday in Karachi’s Korangi Crossing area remains uncontrolled even after three days.
Experts believe that the fire is fuelled by an underground gas pocket, which will eventually deplete, causing the flames to die down naturally.
Chief Fire Officer stated that initial attempts to douse the fire using water and sand proved ineffective, leading authorities to halt those efforts. Karachi Metropolitan Corporation’s fire brigade teams remain on-site, with six to seven vehicles deployed to prevent further spread.
Pakistan Refinery Limited MD Zahid Mir confirmed that the fire is fuelled by shallow gas and poses no threat to nearby oil refinery installations, which are located 500 meters away. He added that sample reports are being analysed, and a new approach to extinguish the fire will be adopted based on expert recommendations.
Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab has stated that it could take one to two weeks for the fire to be fully extinguished. He assured that no lives have been lost, and the city’s infrastructure remains unaffected. He urged media outlets to avoid sensationalizing the incident and advised the public to refrain from visiting the affected area until further notice.
