Israel shares alleged Iranian plot to target Trump with US
2 min readIsrael recently shared intelligence with the United States alleging that Iran was planning to assassinate President Donald Trump, but US agencies have not independently verified the claim, according to a CNN report citing informed sources.
According to the report, Israel informed the US this week about an alleged Iranian plot that reportedly included plans to target President Trump.
Sources said US intelligence agencies had been assessing possible threats against Trump for several weeks.
However, the latest information from Israel was said to relate to a specific alleged plan.
The report said US officials had not independently confirmed the Israeli intelligence and were not separately tracking the alleged plot before receiving the information.
Some US officials reportedly expressed concern that the intelligence was shared while President Trump was considering future US policy towards Iran, suggesting the timing could have been intended to influence his decision-making.
The United States has previously said Iran could seek to target Trump in retaliation for the 2020 US drone strike that killed Iranian General Qassem Soleimani.
Iran has repeatedly denied such allegations.
Responding to the report, the White House referred to President Trump’s recent remarks in which he claimed Iran wanted to target him and that his name was allegedly on a list of Iranian targets.
The report comes as US-Iran tensions have risen again, with the ceasefire between the two sides weakening despite ongoing diplomatic contacts.
According to CNN, behind-the-scenes talks between US and Iranian officials are continuing as both sides seek to reach a new framework for a nuclear agreement by mid-August.
Sources said the US military has prepared contingency plans, but diplomacy remains the preferred course.
