Fresh samples taken as Mustafa Amir’s body exhumed for DNA testing
A team of forensic experts exhumed the body of Mustafa Amir, who was allegedly killed and his body burned in Balochistan’s Dureji, and collected DNA samples on Friday, police said.
The three-member medical team comprising Dr Summaiya Syed, Dr Seri Chand, and Dr Kamran Khan arrived in Karachi and exhumed the Mustafa murder case victim’s body in Edhi Moach Goth cemetery.
The Judicial Magistrate (West) and Citizens-Police Liaison Committee board’s Aamir Hussain were on the site.
The exhumation was carried out by a committee formed under court orders, involving the AVCC team and investigative personnel. A heavy contingent of the Kemari district police was deployed at the cemetery.
According to Edhi volunteers, a mutilated corpse was received on February 12 and it was buried as an unclaimed body on February 16.
Fresh samples taken: police surgeon
Eleven samples have been collected for DNA testing, Dr Summaiya Syed, a police surgeon, told reporters.
“We have taken all the necessary samples for DNA analysis,” she said and added that determining the cause of death might be challenging because of the condition of the body, which was “severely” charred.
“It was very difficult to collect samples from such a badly burned body.”
The DNA report is expected to be available within three to seven days and would be presented in the anti-terrorism court in Karachi.
Judicial magistrate writes letter to Edhi foundation
The judicial magistrate (West) has written a letter to Edhi officials, a copy of which is available with Aaj News.
The body has been handed over to the Edhi authorities following the collection of samples.
“The body will remain in the Edhi mortuary until the DNA report is received,” it said, “if the report is positive, the body will be returned to the family members.”
Background
Amir, a Karachi resident, went missing on January 6, according to the police. His charred body was found in a car in Balochistan, they told reporters in a press conference on February 14.
Police added that they got to know about the death after a suspect made a shocking confession to them during the investigation.
As the story unfolded, investigators said on Saturday that the conflict leading to the missing person’s death arose from a dispute involving a girl.
On February 18, an anti-terrorism court-II in Karachi sent the prime suspect, Armaghan, in the case to police custody on a four-day remand. The court has also ordered that the progress of the case and the medical report be presented at the next hearing.
