American singer Nicole Scherzinger has issued an apology after her recent engagement with social media posts was perceived as endorsing US President-elect Donald Trump.

“I deeply apologize for the hurt caused by my recent engagement with some social media posts. I failed to recognize that my comments could be easily interpreted as politically related, and I am sorry to anyone who understandably came to that conclusion,” she said in her Instagram Story on Friday to clarify her intentions.

The Broadway star’s statement follows backlash over her comment on a photo of Russell Brand wearing a MAGA-style hat that read “Make Jesus First Again,” to which she responded, “Where do I get this hat!!!?”

The Hearbeat crooner added that misconceptions about her beliefs do not truly reflect her values or voting choices.

She expressed her solidarity with marginalised communities who are feeling hurt and concerned by the election results, affirming: “I stand with them, as I always have throughout my life and career.”

Following Trump’s election victory over Vice President Kamala Harris, Scherzinger explained her perspective on the posts she engaged with.

“Like many, in times of adversity and uncertainty, I turn to my faith. I believed the posts were about encouraging love and faith — ‘putting Jesus first.’ To me, Christ represents peace, compassion, hope, and unconditional love, especially for those who may feel it the least right now,” she said.

The former Pussycat Dolls member reiterated her commitment to values that unite people.

“I come from a place of love, and I will always support what brings us closer together. It’s vital that we come together with compassion and love one another now more than ever,” she added.
