IHC dismisses contempt petition by Mazari after name removed from ECL
The Islamabad High Court has disposed the contempt petition filed by former Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Shireen Mazari after the government removed her name from the Exit Control List (ECL).
Despite the court’s earlier order, the Interior Ministry had failed to remove Mazari’s name from the ECL. The contempt of court case was heard by Justice Saman Raffat Imtiaz.
At the hearing, Mazari appeared with her lawyer, while Additional Attorney General Munawar Iqbal Duggal and an Interior Ministry officer were also present in court.
The additional attorney general presented the interior ministry’s report, which stated that Mazari’s name had now been removed from the ECL.
The additional attorney general informed the court that Shireen Mazari’s name had been placed on the ECL with the approval of the Cabinet, but it has now been removed.
In response, the petitioner’s lawyer stated that while her name has been removed from the ECL, they are concerned that it may have been added to some other list, and they are not requesting any specific direction from the court.
On April 4, IHC ordered the Interior Ministry to remove Mazari’s name from the ECL.
On December 1, 2023, IHC issued an order to remove Mazari’s name from the Passport Control List.
Mazari’s name was added to the Passport Control List on May 29 after the violent protests on May 9, based on the Islamabad Police recommendations.
