Adiala Jail denies Bushra Bibi being held in solitary confinement
2 min readAdiala Jail authorities have rejected claims that former first lady Bushra Bibi is being held in solitary confinement, saying she is being treated in accordance with prison rules.
According to key points of a report submitted by the Superintendent of Adiala Jail, additional security arrangements are in place solely because she is the wife of a former prime minister.
The report, submitted by the Superintendent of Adiala Jail, stated that Bushra Bibi has never been kept in solitary confinement, adding that the practice has largely been phased out in Pakistan’s prison system and prolonged solitary confinement is not part of the country’s existing jail regime.
The report stated that Bushra Bibi, a convicted prisoner, is being treated in the same manner as other inmates under the law and is not receiving any discriminatory or preferential treatment.
It said the only additional measures relate to security considerations due to her status as the spouse of a former prime minister.
The jail superintendent said that Bushra Bibi is housed in a spacious accommodation comprising a large room, a separate courtyard and an independent kitchen, where she is free to move about from the opening of the barracks in the morning until lock-up in the evening.
The report added that she has access to natural light, fresh air, privacy and all facilities provided under the jail manual.
According to the report, female prison officers and staff remain in daily contact with Bushra Bibi, while a female medical officer examines her at least twice a day.
Her blood pressure and other vital signs are monitored regularly, and specialist medical examinations are arranged whenever required.
The report further stated that two female warders remain on duty with her at all times to look after her meals and daily needs.
It added that the additional superintendent, deputy superintendent and other senior prison officials regularly visit her accommodation to review her welfare and security arrangements.
The jail authorities also said that Bushra Bibi is allowed to meet her husband, PTI founder Imran Khan, every Tuesday and that her custodial and residential facilities are satisfactory.
In its submission to the court, the superintendent maintained that allegations of solitary confinement and discriminatory treatment were baseless and requested that the petition filed by Bushra Bibi’s daughter be dismissed.
