Dev Patel’s ‘Monkey Man’ edits BJP banners before India release
In another reminder of pressure from right-wing politics in India on Hollywood movies, upcoming movie Dev Patel’s ‘Monkey Man’ has seemingly edited out posters belonging to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party.
The BJP’s saffron banners have instead been replaced by red. The change was noticed by users on the internet after the release of the film’s latest trailer.
The film, which stars and was directed Dev Patel, has been pruchased by Netflix. Another streaming platform, World of Reel, has already passed on the project due to a risk of negative feedback from right-wingers in India.
However, Indian news media does not have more reports of edits in the films.
“International entertainment companies have become more wary of the Indian government’s sharp reactions to their content, sometimes choosing to avoid controversy altogether,” The Hindu recently said.
Monkey Man is a revenge thriller with political overtones, where Patel, a small time prize fighter, sets out for revenge against the elite exploiting India.
The film also as carries tones and references to Hinduism, with the name referencing to legend of divine monkey Hanuman. Some commentators have suggested that by referencing Hanuman, Patel has shut down the avenue of the film being labelled ‘Hinduphobic’.
The film also carries other political references, such as a female politican making phone calls to someone called ‘Rahul’.
Patel shot to fame with the 2008 movie Slumdog Millionaire which gathered widespread praise and even earned Academy Awards.
So far, Monkey Man’s opening weekend ticket sales have reached $12 million, larger thatn the movie’s budget.
