Police arrest motor mechanic involved in illegal kidney transplants

The police in Punjab have arrested a motor mechanic allegedly involved in illegal kidney transplants. He was heading a 25 member gang.

The motor mechanic had performed at least 25 surgeries with the help of his group which consisted of a surgeon doctor, a technician, and others, sources in the police said.

The surgeon doctor, who performed another 300 surgeries, managed to flee.

Police have registered a case against the suspects under sections 224 (Resistance or obstruction by a person to his lawful apprehension), 225 (Resistance or obstruction to lawful apprehension of another person), 353 (Assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), and 186 (Obstructing public servant in discharge of his public functions) of the Pakistan penal code.

The surgeon doctor who managed to escape with the help of four armed men was terminated from his government job in 2017 for his illegal practices.

The gang received millions of rupees from foreigners against transplants and they were using rental properties in several areas of Punjab for surgeries.

Fugitive surgeon Fawad Mumtaz had transplanted the kidneys of several people belonging to China and Saudi Arabia.

The sources claimed that Mumtaz had also transplanted the kidney of the daughter of a leading comedian and he had been running this illegal business since 2006.
