Pakistan-origin Asma Ashraf has been awarded France's National Order of Merit for her contribution in education and social welfare sectors, Geo News reported on Tuesday.

As per the website of the Grand Charcery, which is responisble for the award, the National Order of Merit is the second national order after the Legion of Honour and is given to people who have distinguished merits in the exercise of public, civil or military function or of private activity for at least 10 years.

Ashraf was named among the receipients included in the civilian cohort announced in December 2019.

She was named as a Knight (Chevalier), which recognises those with a minimum of 20 years of public service. The document notes Ashraf's contribution as founder and director of a cultural association with 22 years of service to her name,

According to Murtaza Ali Shah's report, she was awarded the honour for her work with Femme Relais Médiatrice İnterculturelle de Champigny (FRMİC) which provides counselling and solutions to intercultural women.

“I see this honourable recognition as a testament of the values I stand for and I hope to encourage others to carry forward this legacy. I have a lot of projects in mind and I am looking forward to being able to deliver them,” the report quoted Ashraf as saying.

It added that Asma was born in Karachi, Pakistan, before moving to France with his parents in 1977 as a 3 year old.

She is also the Director and Founder of “Pi” (Potential Incubator), an organisation that helps develop and unlock the professional and business potential of young people.
