Hegseth claims decisive victory over Iran
2 min readUS Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth said on Wednesday that the United States has had a decisive military victory over Iran and that Tehran’s missile program has been functionally destroyed.
“Iran’s air force has been wiped out. Iran no longer has an air defence, any sort of a comprehensive air defence system. We own their skies. Their missile program is functionally destroyed. Launchers, production facilities and existing stockpiles were depleted and decimated and almost completely ineffective,” he said.
He said 800 strikes on Tuesday night had destroyed Iran’s industrial base.
“(Iran) can no longer build missiles, build rockets, build launchers, or build UAVs. Their factories have been razed to the ground.”
Hegseth added that the US had used less than 10% of its combat power in its war against Iran.
Hegseth said the US military was “hanging around” in the Middle East to ensure Iran complies with the two-week ceasefire and to monitor the country’s enriched uranium stockpile.
“On the uranium, we’re watching it. We know what they have, and they will give it up, and we’ll get it. We’ll take it if we have to,” Hegseth told reporters.
Asked about the Strait of Hormuz, he said Iran would let ships go through.
“What has been agreed to, what’s been stated, is the strait is open. Our military is watching, sure, their military is watching, but commerce will flow,” he told reporters.
“Any decision to transit the Strait of Hormuz will be based on continuous risk assessments, close monitoring of the security situation, and available guidance from relevant authorities and partners,” said container shipper Maersk.
Speaking alongside US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, Joint Chiefs of Staff Air Force General Dan Caine said the US had met its military objectives in Iran
“A ceasefire is a pause, and the joint force remains ready if ordered or called upon to resume combat operations with the same speed and precision as we’ve demonstrated over the last 38 days, and we hope that that is not the case,” he said.
Caine also said the joint forces had struck more than 13,000 targets during the Iran operation.
He added that 80% of Iran’s air defence systems and more than 90% of Iran’s conventional navy fleet had been destroyed.
