Mahathir Mohamad resigns as Malaysian PM
Mahathir Mohamad resigned on Monday as prime minister of Malaysia.
Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad has submitted his resignation to the king, Reuters reported, Mohamad has submitted his resignation to the king. He has tendered resignation amid talks of forming a new coalition to govern the country. His party has also quit Malaysia ruling coalition.
The tensions between the two rivals are the latest chapter in the political saga of Malaysia’s history.
Both Mahathir and Anwer united before the General Elections of 2018 to drive out the UMNO-dominated Barisan Nasional coalition that had ruled Malaysia for sixty years, in a surprise victory that led to the ouster of then-Prime Minister Najib Razak.
Later, the tensions between the two had been growing as Mahathir resisted setting a specific timetable for keeping his promise to hand power to Anwar.
Mohamad assumed office in May 2018 for the second time as PM.
