Air traffic control sees ‘fireball’ in American Airlines jet collision
Audio recordings from air traffic control have captured the moment an air traffic controller witnessed a “fireball” during the mid-air collision involving an American Airlines jet and a military Blackhawk helicopter near Reagan Washington National Airport.
In the recording, the controller stated, “I just saw a fireball and then it was gone” while describing the incident that occurred just minutes before the commercial flight was scheduled to land.
The jet, carrying 60 passengers from Wichita, Kansas, was approaching Runway 33 when the collision happened around 9pm.
The air traffic controller further reported, “I haven’t seen anything since they hit the river,” indicating the severity of the incident. Emergency responders were under way conducting a search for survivors following the crash.
American Airlines CEO Robert Isom announced that the airline is fully cooperating with federal authorities as they investigate the incident.
