John Carter fails miserably at the box office

Based on the classic Edgar Rice Burroughs story and staring Taylor Kitsch as a Civil War veteran who becomes involved in a totally different kind of war on the red planet, the big sci-fi adventure was unable to beat Universal’s animated family film “The Lorax” – which brought in $39.1 million in its second week and has earned close to $122 million since its release.

Disney’s John Carter, which had an estimated budget of $250 million, saw more love in its international markets earning an estimated $70.6 million. Only available in a few international markets, “The Lorax” has earned an estimated $1.8 million overseas.

Although it struggled domestically in its opening weekend, the film could still become a hit overseas. It opens in China on Friday, March 16th and April 13th in Japan.

Other new films in wide release also seemed to struggle with Open Road’s horror film Silent House earning an estimated $7 million and Eddie Murphy’s comedy A Thousand Words taking in an estimated $6.4 million.

Available at 374 locations, Roadside Attractions' Friends With Kids earned an estimated $2.2 million. CBS Films' Salmon Fishing in the Yemen took in an estimated $240,000 from its limited release.
