Pakistan has warned the world against outlawed TTP “emerging as an umbrella” organisation for regional terrorist groups, alleging that the group purportedly receiving interim Afghanistan’s patronage, PTV News reported.

“The Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan’s objectives are to undermine the security and stability of all of Afghanistan’s neighbours,” Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Munir Akram said in a statement during the UN Security Council briefing on Afghanistan on Monday.

In the past, Pakistan has also highlighted to the international community the threat to security and stability in Afghanistan—and consequently to the entire region and the world—stemming from “over 20 terrorist organizations” operating in Afghanistan.

The South Asian country pointed out that the Afghan interim government has “completely failed” to tackle the dangers posed by terrorist groups based in Afghanistan, such as Al-Qaeda, the TTP, and various militant organisations, including the BLA and the Majeed Brigade.

“Given its long association with Al-Qaeda, the TTP could pose not only a regional but also a global terrorist threat,” the Pakistan UN ambassador said and added that the banned terrorist outfit, with 6,000 fighters, was the “largest, designated” terrorist organisation operating from Afghanistan.

With “safe havens close” to the border, he said that banned terrorist group conducted numerous attacks against Pakistan’s soldiers, civilians and institutions, resulting in hundreds of casualties.

“We have evidence that the Kabul authorities have not only tolerated but are also complicit in the conduct of the TTP’s terrorist cross-border attacks,” he stressed.

Ambassador Akram claimed that the outlawed terrorist oragnisation was collaborating with other terrorist groups present in Afghanistan, like the BLA and the Majeed Brigade, which seek to destabilise Pakistan and disrupt the economic cooperation with China, especially the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor.

“The TTP also receives external support and financing from our principal adversary,” he said.

Akram emphasised that Pakistan would persist in taking “all necessary actions” to eliminate terrorist threats to national security, exercising its right to self-defense as permitted by international law and relevant UNSC resolutions.

He informed the UNSC that, while countering the cross-border activities, Pakistani security and border forces have seized modern weapons that the Afghan authorities had obtained from stockpiles left by foreign forces.

On the economic recovery, Ambassador Akram advocated for the unfreezing of Afghanistan’s central bank assets to stabilise the banking sector and curb illicit financial activities. He also called on Afghanistan to tackle cross-border terrorism and illegal trade to improve bilateral economic cooperation.

While highlighting key regional initiatives such as the TAPI gas pipeline, CASA-1000 electricity project, and the Uzbekistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan Railway, Ambassador Akram reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to promoting economic growth and connectivity in the region.
