How destructive is Israel’s Samson Option?

The Samson Option is Israel's final tactic

International concern is mounting over Israel’s escalating military actions across the Middle East, fueled by fears of a potential “Samson Option” – the use of nuclear weapons as a last resort.

Israel’s recent attacks on Gaza, Syria, and Lebanon, coupled with its confrontation with Iran, have raised alarm bells among regional and international observers. While Iran retaliated with approximately 180 ballistic missiles, Israel shows no signs of de-escalation and is reportedly planning to cripple Iran’s nuclear program, potentially triggering a wider conflict.

Israel’s stated ambition is to establish a “Greater Israel,” encompassing territory currently belonging to Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Iran, Iraq, Turkey, Palestine, Egypt, and parts of North Africa. This expansionist goal, according to experts, could lead Israel to utilize extreme measures, with the “Samson Option” representing a potential final, devastating act.

Italian filmmaker and historian Robin Monotti has issued a stark warning, suggesting that Israel is prepared to cross any line to achieve victory in its ongoing conflicts. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Monotti stated that Israel is poised to employ the Samson Option, highlighting that Israel’s national security strategy is predicated on the premise of never losing a war.

Monotti explained that the Samson Option constitutes Israel’s nuclear doctrine: the use of nuclear weapons in the event of a total assault where conventional defenses fail and population centers are threatened. The name is derived from the biblical figure Samson, who brought down a Philistine temple, killing himself and numerous enemies.

While Israel neither confirms nor denies possessing nuclear weapons, nor details its potential use, its policy of “nuclear ambiguity” has made it difficult to ascertain the country’s true nuclear strategy.

However, in recent years, Israeli leaders have increasingly alluded to their nuclear capabilities and now openly threaten the use of nuclear weapons. This shift towards a more overt nuclear posture has significantly heightened regional tensions and global concerns about the potential for catastrophic escalation.
