UAE woman breaks barriers, becomes youngest to earn heavy truck license
Fouzia Zahour has become the youngest woman in the UAE to obtain a heavy vehicle license, defying traditional norms.
The 32-year-old Indian native not only drives massive 22-wheeler trucks for a living but does so while wearing the traditional Emirati dress, the abaya.
Hailing from India, Fouzia has been the sole breadwinner for her family since her father passed away before she was born.
She took care of her mother until her passing last Ramadan, viewing herself as the “man of the house” and taking on tough responsibilities.
After obtaining a car license in 2013, Fouzia set her sights on earning a heavy vehicle license, a feat achieved by few women in the country. She passed the rigorous eye, physical, and driving tests with flying colors, surprising even the licensing officials who had rarely encountered a female applicant.
Now employed at a private company in Fujairah, Fouzia transports heavy loads of sand and stones across the UAE, expertly maneuvering the double- and triple-axle trucks. Her longest journey to date has been from Dubai’s Jebel Ali to Al Qudra.

Fouzia’s achievement is a testament to her determination and a significant stride towards women’s empowerment in the region.
By proudly wearing her abaya while operating heavy machinery, she is shattering stereotypes and paving the way for more women to enter traditionally male-dominated fields.
“I want to show that even in difficult situations, we can do heavy work,” says Fouzia, who is inspiring others with her trailblazing journey.
