India defeated Australia in the fifth match of the World Cup as a partnership between Virat Kohli and KL Rahul helped in chasing a low total of 200 by six wickets in Chennai on Sunday.

Chasing a target of 200, India lost three wickets on two runs as skipper Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan, and Shreyas Iyer were out only in the second over of the innings. All three Indian batters failed to open account and were sent back to the pavilion on duck.

However, Kohli and Rahul built a strong partnership to take India to 167 runs before Kohli fell as he scored 85 runs. Rahul remained unbeaten on 97, taking India over the edge.

The host of the World Cup chased the target in the 42nd over, with 52 balls remaining in their 50 overs.

After electing to bat first, Australia were all out on 199 in their World Cup clash. Steve Smith remained the top scorer for the Aussie side as he hit 46 runs followed by David Warner who scored 41 after Australia opted to bat first.

Other than Smith and Warner, the Aussie batters seemed clueless against the Indian spin attack as wickets kept falling in intervals.

For India, Ravindra Jadeja took three wickets, only conceding 28 runs in his 10 overs. Kuldeep Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah took two wickets each as Australia was bundled out for 199 runs with three balls remaining in their 50 overs.

Australia lost its fifth wicket for 119 runs while batting against hosts India in their World Cup clash.

The slow innings got bogged down in the middle overs in the face of India’s spin attack, Ravindra Jadeja led the charge with three wickets.

As of 30 overs, Australia were lumbering through with a run rate of just over 4.
