Rashid predicts choas if elections not held
Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid on Saturday warned of chaos in the country if general elections were not held, reiterating that polls “were the only option” to save Pakistan.
“On [April] 11, Shehbaz Sharif and Hamza Shehbaz were about to be indicted… both of these accused are going to become premier and chief minister. So the tussle is increasing,” he told reporters at the Parliament House in Islamabad.
Rashid, who is attending the NA session that will decide Prime Minister Imran Khan’s fate, expressed these views as the House was adjourned till 12:30 today after opposition leader Shehbaz Sharif objected to Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi’s speech. According to Shehbaz, Qureshi took too much time while addressing the House.
The interior minister was of the view that the fight between the government and the opposition was intensifying. “If anybody is thinking that [this tussle] will have a positive result… I am not sure I am optimistic,” he said, adding that for the last four months he was calling for early elections.
“Election, election, and election is the only option to save this country’s democracy,” Rashid said.
To a query, he said that PM Imran was more popular among the public despite the PTI-led government’s apparent mistakes pertaining to inflation and misgovernance. The people have forgotten such issues and are standing with the premier, he claimed.
Rashid, who is famous for his political prophecies, warned of chaos in the country if elections were not held soon. He forewarned of a “big incident”, claiming that a large number of terrorists have entered the country. The interior minister was of the view that the prevailing times in the country were “horrifying”.
He was relieved that political parties now believed that the country’s institutions were “neutral”. But, warned that if it comes to the integrity of the country, they cannot remain so and will have to come out on the streets.
The interior minister refrained from talking about voting on the no-confidence motion.
To a query, he said the premier has accepted the Supreme Court order.
Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid on Friday called for submitting “en masse resignations” to the National Assembly and taking to the streets against the united opposition in order to reveal their “true identities” to the nation.
