PM Imran hails PTI success in KP LG polls as sign of 'what awaits traitors'

As per unofficial results, PTI leads the seats tally with wins in 29 tehsils so far in 2nd phase of local body elections

Prime Minister Imran Khan has felicitated Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Mahmood Khan and his party the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf for the "overwhelming success" in the second phase of local government elections in the province.

KP has "emphatically rejected the traitors who sold out to foreign masters", the prime minister said in a tweet.

"This is an early warning to all traitors of what awaits them in their constituencies," he added.

As per unofficial results of 65 tehsils of 18 districts of the province, the PTI bagged most of the seats in the second phase of the local body polls. At least 39,554 candidates were vying for 12,875 seats in the elections.

So far the ruling PTI has grabbed 29 tehsils seats, while the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl - who had won 15 seats of mayor/chairperson in the first phase of polls - bagged seven seats and secured second position in the second phase of elections, reported Aaj News on Friday.

The Jamat-e-Islami secured third position with five tehsil seats, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz fourth with four seats, the Awami National Party fifth with two seats, the Pakistan People's Party sixth with one seat, while individual candidates bagged two seats.

A total of 28,020 candidates are contesting on different seats in Mansehra, Abbottabad, Battagram, Torghar, Swat, Malakand, Kohistan Upper, Kohistan Lower, Kolai Palas Kohistan, Shangla, Lower Dir, Upper Dir, Chitral Upper, Chitral Lower, Kurram, Orakzai, North Waziristan and South Waziristan, according to the Election Commission of Pakistan.

A total of 651 candidates contested for city mayor and tehsil chairperson seats, 12,980 for general and neighbourhood councils, 2,668 for women seats, 6,451 for labour, 5,213 candidates for Kisan and youth seats and 57 have submitted nomination papers for religious minorities’ seats.
