At least six people were killed and three others injured in rain-related incidents as torrential downpours inundated large parts of the city, prompting authorities to impose a rain emergency and urge residents to stay indoors.

Intermittent heavy rain continued through the day after an intense spell in the morning left major roads submerged, paralysing traffic and exposing gaps in drainage infrastructure.

Fatalities were reported from multiple areas.

In Golimar, a house wall collapsed onto a rickshaw, killing a 40-year-old driver, Irshad, on the spot. Five others — including a 12-year-old girl — died in separate electrocution incidents in Surjani Town, PIB Colony, Super Highway, Ahsanabad and M.A. Jinnah Road.

In Orangi Town, three children were injured when a wall collapsed near a gathering point. The injured were shifted to the hospital for treatment.

Key arteries, including Shahrah-e-Faisal, were submerged, with the Nursery stretch resembling a pond and long queues of stranded vehicles were reported. Several underpasses, including Karimabad, were flooded, while roads caved in at multiple locations, such as Jinnah Avenue and Malir.

Authorities said basements of several buildings were inundated, while motorists and motorcyclists struggled to navigate waterlogged roads and damaged surfaces.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, heavy rainfall was recorded across the city, with the highest accumulation in Nazimabad at 69mm.

Other areas, including Keamari, Saadi Town, University Road, Surjani Town and Gulshan-e-Maymar, also received significant rainfall.

The downpour led to tripping of multiple electricity feeders, causing widespread power outages in areas including New Karachi, Orangi Town, Korangi, Federal B Area, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Malir, Baldia Town and Mawach Goth. In some low-lying areas, electricity supply was suspended as a precautionary measure.

Power utility K-Electric advised residents to stay away from electric poles and unstable structures during the rain.

Civic agencies have been mobilised under directives from the city administration to drain accumulated water and restore traffic flow. Emergency camps and help desks have been set up across districts to assist affected residents.

Officials said all relevant departments remain on high alert and will continue operations to minimise disruption as more rain and strong winds are forecast in the coming hours.
