Murder convict Shahrukh Jatoi was shifted to the Central Jail Karachi on Tuesday after reports came to light that he has been serving his jail term at “a private hospital” rather than at Central Jail as per court orders, Geo News reported.

An Anti-Terrorism Court had awarded the death penalty to Jatoi and Siraj Ali Talpur for Shahzeb Khan’s murder in 2012 following a dispute in the Defence Housing Authority. Siraj’s younger brother, Sajjad Ali Talpur, and another accused Ghulam Murtaza Lashari had been handed life sentences. However, the Sindh High Court on May 13, 2019, commuted the death sentences handed to Jatoi and Siraj into life imprisonment.

The case is now in the apex court where Jatoi has appealed for the removal of anti-terrorism clauses from the case.

The killing of young Shahzeb had sparked widespread protests by civil society and the then chief justice Iftikhar Chaudhry had also taken suo motu notice of the failure of the police to arrest the killers, including Jatoi who had escaped to Dubai.

According to Geo, the provincial home department came into action after media reports revealed that Jatoi been “living a lavish lifestyle” on the upper floor of 30-bed Qamar-ul-Islam Hospital in Karachi for the past 8 months, which was reportedly rented by Jatoi’s family for him. The video footage, which was also aired by the channel, showed that the room was equipped with lavish facilities.

News of Jatoi's "lavish lifestyle in jail" caused a lot of outrage on social media too.

Journalist Mazhar Abbas asked important questions regarding Jatoi's imprisonment.

One user said authorities need to ensure one standard when it comes to implementing the law.

Another user said the Sindh government should be held accountable for this.

According to the law, murder convicts like Jatoi are supposed to admit to a government hospital if they complain of health-related problems.

Earlier in 2018, the then chief justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar during his visit to the prison cell of Shahrukh Jatoi at the Karachi’s Landhi Jail expressed displeasure over the VIP treatment being meted out to Jatoi and ordered the authorities to shift the murder convict to the death cell.

The former CJP had also summoned a report from the IG Prisons.
