Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz President Shehbaz Sharif tweeted on Saturday his rejection of Prime Minister Imran Khan’s statement on holding a referendum in Kashmir where Kashmiris could decide whether they wanted independence or to live with Pakistan.

In his tweet, he said that casual remarks by Khan in a political gathering are damaging for the Kashmir cause. His government’s Kashmir policy has already given India space to maneuver, he added.

The leader of the opposition also said he rejections any position which goes against the UNSC resolutions on Kashmir.

During his address at an election rally in Azad Kashmir ahead of Sunday's polls, the prime minister said he would hold a referendum in Kashmir, with people free to choose the future of their nation.

Khan also rubbished PML-N claims that his government had plans for turning AJK into province of Pakistan.

He said he supports UNSC resolutions where people of Jammu and Kashmir were given right to choose whether they wanted to accede to Pakistan or India.

In related news, the Jang group's journalist Hamid Mir tweeted an image of Article 257 from Pakistan's Constitution, perhaps to remind all parties of the provisions that exist in the country's law.
