Punjab braces for heavy rain as PDMA issues alert
1 min readThe Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has forecast rain across most districts of Punjab over the next 24 hours and directed district administrations to remain alert.
According to the PDMA spokesperson, rain is expected in Rawalpindi, Murree, Galiyat, Jhelum, Chakwal, Attock, Sialkot, Narowal, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Hafizabad and Wazirabad.
Rain is also forecast in Lahore, Kasur, Okara, Sheikhupura, Nankana Sahib, Sargodha, Khushab, Mianwali and Noorpur Thal. Faisalabad, Jhang, Toba Tek Singh, Layyah and Bhakkar may also receive rain on August 20 and 21.
The PDMA warned of possible urban flooding in low-lying areas of Lahore, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Gujrat and Sialkot from August 17 to 20. Flash flooding in storm drains is also possible.
The sixth spell of monsoon rains is expected to continue until August 21, with a risk of landslides in Murree, Galiyat and other hilly areas.
PDMA Director General Saif Anwar Jappa directed commissioners and deputy commissioners to remain alert.
Health, irrigation, construction and communications, local government and livestock departments have also been alerted.
The PDMA advised citizens to avoid unnecessary travel during bad weather, stay in safe places during storms and keep children away from low-lying areas, standing water, electric wires and poles.
Residents were also advised not to go outdoors during thunderstorms.
The PDMA urged citizens to follow safety instructions during severe weather and contact its helpline at 1129 in case of an emergency.
