Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni on Tuesday met Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir at the General Headquarters (GHQ), where the two sides discussed regional security, bilateral security cooperation and effective border management amid rising tensions in the region.

According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the meeting focused on matters of mutual interest, regional and bilateral security, and measures to strengthen border management between the two neighbouring countries.

Momeni praised Pakistan’s constructive diplomatic role in easing regional tensions and promoting peace, particularly its efforts to encourage dialogue amid the ongoing tensions between Iran and the United States.

The two sides also reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining close coordination and strengthening cooperative mechanisms aimed at promoting regional security, stability and shared prosperity, the military’s media wing said.

Earlier, the Iranian minister called on Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif at the Prime Minister’s House, where he delivered a special message from Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.

According to official sources, Momeni briefed the prime minister on the reasons behind the recent escalation between Iran and the United States and appreciated Pakistan’s efforts to facilitate dialogue between Tehran and Washington.

Expressing concern over the growing tensions, PM Shehbaz urged both sides to return to negotiations to prevent further escalation. He also reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening its longstanding relations with Iran.

Both sides agreed to maintain close coordination and continue high-level engagement on matters of mutual interest and the evolving regional situation.

Momeni, who arrived in Islamabad on Monday night on an official visit, was received at Islamabad International Airport by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi.

Earlier on Tuesday, he was accorded a ceremonial welcome at Islamabad Police Lines, where Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry received the visiting dignitary.

A special contingent of the Islamabad Police presented a guard of honour, while the national anthems of Pakistan and Iran were played.

The Iranian minister later visited the Pakistan Monument, where a contingent of the Federal Constabulary presented a salute. He laid a floral wreath at the Martyrs’ Monument, offered Fateha for Pakistan’s fallen heroes and paid tribute to their sacrifices.

Momeni also viewed Islamabad and the Margalla Hills from Shakarparian and distributed awards among police personnel in recognition of their outstanding services.
