‘I wrote it today’: Abhishek Sharma’s morning note turns historic by evening
Abhishek Sharma turned his morning scribble into IPL history on Saturday, blasting a jaw-dropping 141 off just 55 balls to help Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) pull off the second-biggest run chase in IPL history, defeating Punjab Kings by 8 wickets.
SRH, languishing at the bottom of the table with four consecutive losses, looked set for another defeat after Punjab Kings posted a daunting 245/6 on a flat Hyderabad pitch. But Abhishek and Australian opener Travis Head had other plans.
The duo launched a stunning counter-attack, plundering 171 runs in just 12 overs, breaking the back of the chase early and leaving fans in awe. Abhishek reached his century in just 40 balls, becoming the highest-scoring Indian in IPL history with a fiery knock laced with 14 fours and 10 sixes.
From the bottom of the table to back in the race, Hyderabad stunned fans and critics alike by chasing Punjab Kings’ mammoth 245-run total with nine balls to spare.
But the moment that truly stole the show? Abhishek pulled out a handwritten note from his pocket after reaching his hundred, flashing the message,“ This one is for the Orange Army.“
“I wrote it today itself because I usually wake up and write something. I got a random thought that if I do something today, that would be for Orange Army,” Abhishek said after being named Player of the Match.
The highest score by an Indian in the IPL was not about mindless slogging, though, as Abhishek tweaked his approach and shuffled across to exploit the short boundary on the leg side whenever Punjab bowled to him with a packed off.
The heartfelt gesture sent SRH fans into a frenzy, instantly going viral.
