The Sindh Assembly’s parliamentary committee has approved grace marks for 11th-grade students following concerns over low pass rates.

During a committee meeting addressing the issue of unexpectedly low results, it was decided that students will be awarded 15% additional marks in Physics and Mathematics, while Chemistry students will receive 20% extra marks.

A fact-finding report presented during the session highlighted that the issue gained traction on social media, with political parties also using it to draw public attention.

The report further revealed that over the past decade, the pass rate for students has consistently remained below 47%.

The inquiry committee conducted meetings with affected students and their parents, reviewed examination records, and assessed the marking system.

The report noted delays in providing textbooks for Physics and Islamic Studies, making it difficult for students to prepare adequately.

It also highlighted that Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics exams were particularly challenging this year.

Additionally, irregularities in the marking process were identified, including teachers checking exam copies at home, which violated standard procedures.

The report also pointed out that teachers were not compensated for their marking duties, leading to demotivation.

The committee observed potential data entry errors in the IT section, with nearly 35% of pre-medical cases affected and 74% of pre-engineering cases impacted due to re-totaling discrepancies.

The report recommended upgrading the board’s IT software and hardware, improving teacher training, and promptly filling key vacant positions.

Furthermore, the committee suggested comparing Sindh’s examination board results with other provinces and addressing broader academic challenges.

The performance of the board’s inspection section was deemed unsatisfactory, with calls for reforms to ensure fairer results in future examinations.
