Widespread protests in Sindh against new canal construction
The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) staged protests across various cities in Sindh against the federal government’s new canal construction project, claiming it would deprive the province of its rightful share of water.
Demonstrators in Ghotki, Tharparkar, Shikarpur, Qambar Shahdadkot, and other cities chanted slogans against the federal government, demanding an immediate halt to the project.
Jacobabad
In Jacobabad, PPP workers rallied from the People’s Secretariat to the Press Club, voicing strong opposition to the project.

Led by city president Shaukat Ghaniyo, the protesters raised slogans rejecting the six proposed canals from the Indus River, calling them an “anti-people project” that would turn Sindh barren to make Cholistan fertile.
Nawabshah
A similar protest was held in Nawabshah, where PPP workers marched from the People’s Secretariat to the Press Club, demanding that the government withdraw the canal project and respect Sindh’s water rights.
Larkana
In Larkana, a protest march was held across multiple routes, culminating in a sit-in at Jinnah Bagh Chowk.
PPP leader MPA Jameel Soomro stated, “All of Sindh is protesting against these canals. The people will not allow this project to move forward.”
Tharparkar
In Tharparkar, a massive rally was taken out in Mithi, starting from Sadiq Faqir Chowk and ending at Kashmir Chowk.
Local leaders reaffirmed their commitment to protecting Sindh’s resources, emphasising that former President Asif Ali Zardari has already taken a clear stance against the project in the joint parliamentary session.
They also announced that Bilawal Bhutto Zardari would launch district-wise rallies across Sindh after April 4.
Ghotki
PPP supporters in Ghotki staged a protest in Mirpur Mathelo, marching from Ghanta Ghar to Bhitai Chowk.
Led by PPP district general secretary Sikandar Ali Lakho, the demonstrators fiercely criticized the federal government, calling the project a deliberate attempt to deprive Sindh of water.
Qambar Shahdadkot
In Qambar Shahdadkot, farmers and traders joined PPP workers in a protest rally led by district president Qamaruddin Gopang.
The rally ended at Bhutto Chowk, where demonstrators blocked traffic, demanding an end to the canal project.
Sindh government’s stance
Sindh government spokesperson and MPA Saadia Javed backed the protests, declaring, “PPP’s movement against the six-canal project is the true voice of the people. We have always fought for Sindh’s water rights.”
She recalled PPP’s previous struggle against the Kalabagh Dam, vowing that the current protests would force the federal government to withdraw the project.
