Jailed former prime minister Imran Khan’s party the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf wanted to build contacts with the establishment, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah has said.

“[Punjab Chief Minister] Maryam Nawaz’s statement is correct and there is substantial evidence that the PTI founder has expressed a desire to negotiate with the establishment,” he told private news.

In the recent past, the PTI has claimed that Khan has written at least two letters to Chief of Army Staff General Syed Asim Munir over the people’s “perception” about the military and elections.

In his next letter, his lawyer said Khan wished to express his grievances against the system and propose “structural reforms” to resolve crises faced by the country.

Last week, Faisal Chaudhry told reporters outside the Adiala Jail that Khan’s upcoming letter would outline six key points.

But COAS General Munir denied on February 13 receiving any letters amid the former ruling party’s claims regarding such documents.

He described Khan’s attempts as seeking an “NRO [National Reconciliation Ordinance] and relief”. Sanaullah clarified that the government has not extended any offers to the PTI founder; however, an invitation for dialogue was extended “as democracy relies on dialogue to resolve issues.”

The PML-N leader reiterated that they have never refused negotiations and have “not discussed any deals, releases, or dismissals of cases.”

He advised the PTI to protest within the framework of the Constitution and law, stating that the country was in the “process of stabilising and no crisis should emerge at this time.”

Sanaullah mentioned that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had offered the PTI the opportunity for negotiations on the floor of the house. He stressed the need for all political parties to come together to address the country’s crisis. He stated that political stability was essential for paving the way for economic stability, which “will ultimately improve the conditions for the common man and create job opportunities.”

He was of the view that if anyone has objections to the 26th Constitutional Amendment, they should approach the court or Parliament for resolution.
