A powerful explosion ripped through a pickup truck carrying mine workers in Balochistan’s Harnai on Friday, killing at least 10 people and wounding six, district administration officials said.

The blast might have been caused by a landmine targeting the labour vehicle, according to Levies.

Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have seen an uptick in terrorism incidents, with the government demanding the interim Afghan government take action against militant organisations operating in its country.

The investigation was under way as the community mourned the loss and called for enhanced security measures to protect vulnerable workers in such high-risk areas.

President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif “strongly condemned” the blast in the Shahrag area as they expressed “deep sorrow” over the loss of lives.

In separate statements, the president and the prime minister offered “heartfelt condolences” to the families of the deceased.

They vowed to continue efforts till the elimination of terrorism from the country.

PM Shehbaz directed the relevant authorities to provide the best medical support to the injured. He also prayed for their early recovery.

“The individuals who harm the lives and property of innocent and defenseless citizens will have to pay a very heavy price,” the prime minister said.

Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti also condemned the attack and expressed a “firm commitment to eradicate the scourge of terrorism.”

Terrorists who target civilians “are not deserving of mercy,” the provincial government said and reaffirmed its commitment to take “stringent action” against elements that undermine peace in the region.

“We will not allow the malicious intentions of peace enemies to succeed,” the spokesperson stated and added that the provincial government has ordered a thorough investigation into the bombing incident, and law enforcement agencies have arrived at the scene to collect evidence.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi also spoke on the same wavelength. He echoed Bugti’s sentiment in saying that the “beasts who target innocent civilians do not deserve any leniency.”
