Magnus Carlsen announces return to chess championships after dress code scandal
The world’s top chess player, Magnus Carlsen, has announced his return to the World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships following a change in the tournament’s dress code.
In a social media update on Sunday, Carlsen confirmed his participation for Monday, stating, “Oh, I am definitely playing in jeans tomorrow.”
Carlsen’s decision to withdraw from the competition last Friday was prompted by a ruling that prohibited him from wearing jeans, which he had on during the event.
The International Chess Federation (FIDE) responded to the controversy by relaxing its dress code, allowing for “elegant minor deviations” from the previously strict guidelines. This change means players can now wear appropriate jeans that match their jackets.
Carlsen, a five-time world champion, was fined $200 for breaching the dress code after wearing jeans in a few rounds, alongside a shirt and blazer. He explained that he had not considered changing out of his jeans after a lunch meeting prior to the tournament.
Initially, when informed of the dress code violation, Carlsen offered to change his trousers for the following day but was told he needed to do so immediately, which he refused. This led to his withdrawal from the competition and a statement about leaving New York for a more pleasant destination.

FIDE President Arkadi Dvorkovich emphasized that while the dress code has been relaxed, players are expected to maintain a professional appearance to uphold the tournament’s festive atmosphere on New Year’s Eve. Tournament staff will be tasked with ensuring that outfits adhere to the new guidelines.
Carlsen’s return comes amidst ongoing controversies surrounding his career, including a recent legal dispute with American chess prodigy Hans Niemann, whom he accused of cheating after an unexpected loss in 2022. Niemann has denied these allegations and is pursuing a defamation lawsuit against Carlsen and others involved.
