Stray dog attacks injure 300,000 people in Sindh in 2024
Sindh is grappling with a severe public safety crisis, as stray dog attacks have resulted in injuries to approximately 300,000 individuals throughout 2024.
According to Samaa, reports indicate that 15 people have died from serious dog bites, with Karachi emerging as the most affected city, accounting for over 50,000 cases and 18 fatalities.
Experts criticize the provincial government for failing to implement effective measures to control the stray dog population since a 2018 pilot project focused on vaccination and sterilization was abandoned without follow-up initiatives.
Medical professionals, including Aftab Gauhar from the Dog Bite Clinic and Dr. Romana Farhat, an anti-rabies specialist, emphasize the urgent need for vaccination campaigns and dog control measures.
Citizens are calling for robust dog eradication programs to safeguard public safety. Health Minister Dr. Azra Pechuho noted that managing stray dogs is under the jurisdiction of municipal authorities.
