Ban on Adiala meetings means no hearings for Imran

The hearing was the only place where journalists could interact with Imran

The federal government imposed a ban on all meetings inside Adiala Jail in view of the security situation for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit. However, one important conseuquence of the decision is that no hearings involving Imran Khan or Bushra Begum, both incarcerated in the jail, can be heard until the ban is lifted.

The government placed the ban on ‘all’ meetings inside the jail on Tuesday and it will remain enforced till October 18, when the summit ends.

Since being incarcerated, Imran Khan has not been brought out of jail a single time, even for court hearings.

Instead, judges, lawyers and witnesses have all travelled to the jail for cases. The convictions Imran Khan received before the general election were also announced in the jail.

However, a scheduled hearing in the Toshakhana case was adjourned without proceedings on Tuesday as access to jail is no longer possible.

Judge Shahrukh Arjumand heard the case in Islamabad’s judicial complex and adjourned it straightaway.

Apart from the legal process, the hearings in Adiala Jail were the only moment where journalists managed to interact with Imran since he was jailed.

However, with the ban, his interactions with journalists, which often made headlines, are now banned.
