Stray dogs bit 300,000 people in Sindh this year
Sindh province is grappling with a severe stray dog problem, with staggering statistics highlighting the escalating crisis. Last year, an estimated 300,000 people were bitten by stray dogs across the province. In Karachi alone during 2024, 18 people died from dog bites, and over 70,000 sustained injuries.
Major hospitals in Karachi are overwhelmed. Jinnah Hospital reported over 47,000 dog bite cases, resulting in 11 deaths due to a lack of readily available vaccines. Indus Hospital recorded 15,000 cases, with seven fatalities from rabies. Civil Hospital treated over 36,000 cases, administering anti-rabies vaccines to 16,150 individuals.
Dr. Romana Farhat, in charge of the Civil Hospital’s Dog Bite Clinic, emphasized that young children are particularly vulnerable. She stressed the need to address the root causes of the problem to prevent further incidents.
Citizens are demanding urgent action to control the stray dog population. The majority of dog bite cases originate from areas like Baldia, Surjani, and Lyari.
Doctors advise thorough cleaning of the affected area with detergent for 15-20 minutes immediately after a dog bite. The lack of readily available vaccines and the sheer volume of cases underscore the urgent need for effective solutions to this public health emergency.
