Pakistan’s wicket-keeping batsman, Mohammad Rizwan, is considered a strong candidate to lead the national cricket team following Babar Azam’s resignation, sources claimed.

Sources indicated that PCB officials have been directed to consult with Rizwan regarding team selection.

“By stepping down, I will gain clarity moving forward and focus more energy on my game and personal growth, the 29-year-old batter wrote on X.

Kirsten’s strategy included appointing a new captain for the T20 format, a change he proposed back in July.

In July, Kirsten visited Pakistan to hold meetings and present a report on the T20 World Cup, according to sources. During that time, he also met with Babar to discuss captaincy issues.

Babar was not part of any consultation process; however, he had notified a senior PCB official of his decision before publicly announcing his resignation.

The former captain declared his intention to step down from white-ball captaincy, stating that it was time for him to concentrate on his playing role and personal development.

Babar was not asked to resign and has been encouraged to remain captain of the ODI team, as white-ball coach Gary Kirsten prefers him in that role.
