Atletico Madrid defender Robin Le Normand has been diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury after a collision during the team’s 1-1 draw against Real Madrid in LaLiga on Sunday, the club announced on Tuesday.

The incident occurred in the closing minutes of the match when Le Normand, 27, collided with Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni while both players jumped for a cross, resulting in a significant head impact.

Following the match, Le Normand was evaluated by specialists, who confirmed he suffered a traumatic brain injury along with a subdural haematoma. Atletico Madrid explained that subdural haematomas happen when blood accumulates between the brain and skull, commonly due to head trauma.

Le Normand, an important player in Atlético’s defence and a Spanish international, was seen leaving the pitch with assistance from medical staff after the game was paused.

The club stated that Le Normand’s recovery will adhere to standard protocols for brain injuries, although no specific timeline for his return to play has been provided. Atlético Madrid is scheduled to face Benfica in a Champions League match in Portugal on Wednesday.
