The Pakistan Cricket Board on Wednesday brought major changes in the team management and captaincy roles after PCB Chief Zaka Ashraf held meetings with Babar Azam and other officials.

Pace bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi was named captain of Pakistan’s T20 team after Babar Azam resigned from his captaincy role in all three formats, PCB said in a statement.

Shan Masood was given the role of captain in red ball and will lead the team in the three-match test tour to Australia in December, it added.

He has been appointed captain till the end of the ICC World Test Championship 2023-25.

“Shan’s first assignment as captain will be a three-match Test series against Australia in Australia starting from 14 December,” it added.

Meanwhile, the PCB said that Pakistan’s captain in the ODI format will be announced in due course.

Former cricketer Wahab Riaz was appointed chief selector, a position which was earlier held by former captain Inzamamul Haq.

Haq tendered his resignation after reports emerged that he was a shareholder in a company owned by a players’ agent raising concerns about “potential conflicts of interest”.

Former captain Mohammad Hafeez was appointed Director of Cricket and will take on the responsibility of Mickey Arthur. Hafeez will also choose the coaching staff of the team.

Additionally, Suhail Tanvir has been appointed junior chief selector.

Earlier, Babar Azam announced his decision of stepping down from captaincy across all three formats.

“Today, I am stepping down as the captain of Pakistan in all formats. It’s a difficult decision but I feel it is a right time for this call,” he wrote in a post on X.

His decision came shortly after meeting PCB Chief Zaka Ashraf at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore where he submitted a report on the team’s dismal performance in the World Cup.
