Report reveals over 44,000 incidents of street crime hit Karachi this year
A report by the Citizen Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) has revealed a staggering number of crimes in Karachi during the first seven months of 2024. The report, obtained by Aaj News, shows that over 44,000 criminal incidents were reported in the city, with motorcycle theft and snatching topping the list.
The report highlighted that over 31,000 motorcycles were stolen or snatched in the first seven months of 2024, while over 1,000 cars were also reported stolen or snatched.
The CPLC report further revealed that over 11,000 mobile phones were snatched from citizens during the same period. January saw the highest number of crimes at 7,815, while June recorded the lowest with 4,954 incidents. The crime rate showed an upward trend in January, February, and March, before declining from April onwards.
The report also highlighted the alarmingly low recovery rate of stolen goods. Out of over 11,000 stolen mobile phones, only 123 were recovered. Similarly, only 1,066 out of over 31,000 stolen motorcycles were recovered.

The report also noted 12 cases of kidnapping for ransom and 57 extortion incidents in the first seven months of the year.

Karachi witnessed a series of violent incidents overnight, including multiple shootings, arrests following alleged police encounters, and fatal accidents.
In Orangi Town, a general secretary of a religious group, Taj Muhammad Hanfi, narrowly escaped an attack when four assailants on two motorcycles opened fire on his vehicle. Hanfi was unharmed, but the attackers fled the scene. The incident occurred near Islam Chowk, where a conference of the Shaheed-e-Islam Conference was taking place.
Meanwhile, alleged police encounters took place in Gulbahar Eidgah Ground, Sher Shah Paracha Bridge, and Orangi Town. Eight suspects, including one injured, were apprehended after an exchange of fire. Weapons, motorcycles, and mobile phones were recovered from the suspects.
In separate incidents, a man named Zubair was injured in a shooting near Landi Chhoti Market, and another man, Naseeb Iqbal, was injured by a stray bullet near Korangi Bilal Masjid.
A woman was killed in a traffic accident near Northern Bypass MD Kat, while another individual lost his life due to electrocution at his home near Sarjani Town.
