UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced the creation of a new Violent Disorder Unit to safeguard the Muslim community.

The riots erupted earlier this week in Southport following a deadly stabbing attack that left three young girls dead. Rumors that the attacker was Muslim sparked hundreds of far-right protesters to target mosques, leading to violent clashes with police.

During an emergency meeting with police chiefs, Starmer vowed to “take every step possible” to protect the Muslim community.

He announced the new Violent Disorder Unit, which will allow police forces to share intelligence and coordinate a robust response to mob violence.

“Mosques being attacked because they’re mosques - the far right are showing who they are. We have to show who we are in response to that,” Starmer said.

“The far right’s conduct is coordinated and deliberate. It is a group absolutely bent on violence and we will ensure it is met with the most robust response in the next few days and weeks.”

The Prime Minister assured police that the government will provide them with the necessary powers to tackle the rioters, stating “It is not protesting, it is not legitimate, it is crime. We will put a stop to it.”
