Kashmiri poet Ahmad Farhat, who was arrested on charges of interfering in the government’s affairs, was allowed to meet with his family members.

The Muzaffarad police arranged the meeting, according to BBC Urdu. He is currently in police custody, facing charges of attempted murder and anti-terrorism.

Initial reports said that Farhat’s meeting was arranged with his wife, daughter, and brother. Farhat’s lawyer, Eman Muzari, has also confirmed the meeting with his family to the Urdu version of the British news outlet.

Farhat went missing on May 17 from Islamabad. A case was registered against him on May 29 for interfering in the government’s affairs in Azad Jammu and Kashmir. The poet’s wife filed a petition in the Islamabad High Court regarding his disappearance. The court had directed Farhat’s lawyer Imaan Mazari to contact the authorities in AJK.

Mazari said that Farhat’s wife and brother informed her that they were able to meet Farhat last night.

According to reports, Farhat was taken into custody by the Bagh police following an altercation during a routine investigation.

The police have filed a case against Farhat, alleging that he obstructed government officials in the performance of their duties and committed a criminal offence.

His wife had revealed that Farhan had been receiving serious threats over the past two years, warning him to refrain from writing content deemed against the interests of the establishment. His disappearance on May 17 prompted Naqvi to file a petition in the Islamabad High Court, seeking his recovery.

During the court hearing last week, the court summoned the sector commander of Islamabad, as well as representatives from the ISI and MI, to appear before the court on Wednesday. But only the inspector general of Islamabad Police appeared in court and informed that Farhat was in the custody of the Bagh police.
