Eligibility requirements for becoming a Canadian citizen

There are five basic requirements, but there may be additional requirements depending on situation

The Canadian government has shared requirements for individuals seeking Canadian citizenship.

To become a Canadian citizen, the individual must be a permanent resident, have lived in Canada for three out of the last five years, have filed taxes if required, pass a test on rights, responsibilities, and knowledge of Canada, and prove language skills.

Past Canadian citizens seeking to regain their Canadian citizenship must follow specific procedures and also adhere to the restoration process outlined by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

The individuals are required to take and pass a citizenship test as the main course is related to the rights and responsibilities of Canadian citizens and Canada’s history, geography, economy, government, laws, and symbols.

There is also a need to take a language test, comprising of everyday conversations, simple instructions and basic grammar for individuals aged between 18 and 54 years old.
