PM gives node to powerful digital rights agency to regulate social media
Prime Minister Shebaz Sharif has granted approval to regulate social media by amending the PECA (Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act) Act 2016 and establishing the Digital Rights Protection Agency.
Following the Cabinet’s approval of the proposed PECA Bill, it will be presented in Parliament.
The Ministry of IT will be responsible for the implementation of the Digital Rights Protection Agency.
The authority will provide consultation to the government on matters related to digital rights.
The powerful Digital Rights Authority will regulate online content.
The authority will investigate violations of the law on social media and take action against those who violate the new PECA law.
The Digital Rights Authority will be able to summon and interrogate individuals involved in digital rights violations.
