Climate change could wipe out bananas from the world

Producers experiencing from increasing prices of energy and labor

In the World Banana Forum, senior economist Pascal Liu emphasized that climate change has a huge threat to the supply chain due to fast-spreading diseases.

The World Banana Forum took place on Tuesday in Rome to resolve fruit-related challenges.

“I think climate change is really an enormous threat to the banana sector,” Mr Liu said.

Experts pointed out that bananas are regarded as one of the most loved fruits among people that will get overpriced because of climate change.

The bananas are the world’s most-exported fruit wrapped in a yellow sheath that provides a sweet treat to people.

Some shops in the UK have faced shortages of bananas due to sea storms last week that resulted in a delay of goods.

The UK imports around 5 billion bananas every year and 90% are sold through supermarkets.

Bananas have the power to overcome failing weather challenges; however, cannot deal with global warming issues.

This yellow fruit is vulnerable to rising temperatures that can spread one of the most hazardous fungus, Fusarium Wilt TR4 which has moved from Australia and Asia to Africa and now transmitting toward South America.

Once the fungus has entered the plantation, it can eliminate all trees making it challenging to remove it.

“We know that the spores of this Fusarium Wilt are extremely resistant, and they can be spread by flooding, they can be spread by strong winds,” Mr Liu said.

Banana producers are facing challenges from fertilizers rising costs, energy, and transport issues to a shortage of employees.

“If there’s not a major increase in supply, I project that banana prices will remain relatively high in the coming years,” Mr Liu warned.

Consumers prefer to purchase bananas and other goods produced in sustainable ways and producers grow these commodities through greener ways with authentic certifications to express that fruits are grown sustainably.

“These regulations are a good thing in a way because they help producers seize the opportunity of making their production systems more sustainable,” said Mr Liu.

The World Banana Forum is a UN umbrella group that brings together industry stakeholders including retailers, producer countries, exporters and research institutions.
