Indian actor Sonu Sood has warned his fans of a deepfake video in which he is seeking money from a family.

“This is the latest incident where someone tried to extract money from an unsuspecting family, by chatting with them through video call pretending to be Sonu Sood,” he said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, on Thursday.

Sood has joined a list of celebrities in recent times that have criticised such videos and warned people of falling into that trap.

Apart from his acting abilities, the Bollywood star is known for his social and relief work. He had helped many needy Indian families during the coronavirus pandemic when many people were jobless.

The Happy New Year actor had arranged buses for migrants to return home when India was fighting increasing cases of Covid.

In the recent past, cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar and actor Rashmika Mandanna warned people of deepfakes where they were seen promoting brands or working out.

Deepfake is a mechanism to generate fake audio, fake image, and fake video through the use of artificial intelligence, cyber security expert Rafay Baloch told Aaj News earlier this month.

He said that such fake videos could be identified by checking the blinking of the eye, which is different from human eyes. Moreover, they are shot from the front, not from the side.

In his post, Sood said that his film “Fateh” is inspired by real-life incidents involving deepfake and fake loan apps.

“Many innocent individuals fall into this trap. I request all of you to be vigilant if you receive such calls,” he said.
