The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has approved an increase of Rs1.60 per unit in the price of electricity under the monthly fuel adjustment for April.

This adjustment will impose a burden of Rs12 billion on consumers.

The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) had requested an increase of Rs2.1 per unit, which NEPRA approved after scrutinizing the data. The additional amount will be reflected in the power bills for May.

According to the CPPA, due to weather conditions, four billion units less power was generated in April. This led to a difference in revenue generation due to reduced power consumption.

In total, more than 9.73 billion units of electricity were provided to distribution companies (DISCOs) in April.

The breakdown of power generation includes 1.87 billion units from hydropower, 1.81 billion from coal, 1.18 billion from gas, and 2.41 billion units from RLNG plants.

NEPRA officials emphasized the need for the privatization of distribution companies to improve the electricity system.

On the other hand, electricity consumers of Karachi will get a relief of Rs72 million as it has reduced the power tariff by 5 paisa. It will not be applicable to lifeline consumers of K-electric.

According to Nepra officials, in April, the electricity generated by its own resources was Rs23.3 per unit.
