Council of Islamic Ideology declares Transgender Act 2018 un-Islamic
The Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) has declared the Transgender Act, 2018 as illegitimate and un-Islamic.
A high-level meeting of the CII was held in Islamabad on Tuesday, in which the participants suggested setting up a committee to review the Act.
“The committee should conduct a detailed review of the existing law on transgenders so that a comprehensive legislation can be made keeping in mind every aspect of the issue,” it said in a statement following its meeting.
CII is a constitutional body of Pakistan, responsible for giving legal advice on Islamic issues to the government and the Parliament.
The Council said that various sections of the existing act are not in line with the Islamic teachings and could lead to serious problems in the society.
The law received massive criticism due to ambiguity in its various sections, related to marriage and division of inheritance.
