Cholera outbreak: 149 cases so far reported in Karachi in 2022
Karachi. At least 149 cases of cholera have so far been reported in Karachi in 2022, as the viral infection spreads across the province in the wake of the rising temperature. Experts have advised people to have clean drinking water and take precautionary measures.
According to the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, cholera is an acute diarrheal illness caused by infection of the intestine with Vibrio cholerae bacteria. People can get sick when they swallow food or water contaminated with cholera bacteria. The infection is often mild or without symptoms, but can sometimes be severe and life-threatening.
Dr Adil, the in charge of the Sindh Government Korangi Hospital Emergency Department, also expressed concerns over the cholera outbreak in the city while talking to Aaj News.
“Citizens should follow precautionary measures and be careful in eating and drinking,” he said, as people in large numbers turned up at food outlets during the Eid holidays.
Medical experts advised the people to “immediately” consult the doctor if they have cholera as delay could lead to dehydration, which leads to brain dysfunction.
