Opposition submits no-confidence motion against KP chief minister
With the voting on no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Imran Khan scheduled for today, opposition parties in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have submitted a no-trust move against Chief Minister Mahmood Khan.
The document was signed by 36 lawmakers of the united opposition, including 17 of the Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal, 12 of the Awami National Party, six of the Pakistan People’s Party and one of Jamaat-i-Islami, reported Dawn.
ANP’s Sardar Hussain Babak, Khushdil Khan and Shagufta Malik, PPP’s Nighat Orakzai, MMA’s Mian Nisar Gul and Balochistan Awami Party’s Bilawal Afridi submitted the no-confidence motion to KP assembly secretary Kifayatullah Afridi at his office.
Out of 145 members of the provincial assembly, the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf has a majority in the House with 94 MPAs, while the opposition has 51 lawmakers in the KP assembly.
A provincial assembly session that had been summoned by the government is already in session and the speaker has adjourned the sitting to May 10, according to the Dawn report.
“We beg to move that leave may be granted under sub-rule (1) of rule 18D of the Provincial Assembly of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Procedure and Conduct of Business Rules to move a resolution of no-confidence against the Chief Minister under Article 136 of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan,” read the motion submitted by the opposition members.
It added: “Whereas Mr Mahmood Khan has ceased to command the confidence of the majority of the members of this assembly as the chief minister, it is hereby resolved that Mr Mahmoood Khan shall stand ceased to hold the said office.”
