From 1939 to 2022: Batman movies over the years
The character of Batman that debuted in Detective Comics in 1939 in a two-page story has now appeared in nearly two dozen films, all telling a timeless tale of the caped crusader in wildly different ways. The latest take on the versatile character is by director Matt Reeves in ‘The Batman’ starring English actor Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne.
The release of ‘The Batman’ got us to reminisce about past Batman movies so we created a list of all movies to watch in order.
Batman: The Movie (1966)
Starring Adam West as the protector of Gotham, Batman, the movie is the first full-length theatrical adaptation of the DC Comics character. Released by 20th Century Fox, the film follows Batman and Robin, played by Burt Ward, as they face four supervillains who plan to hold the world for ransom with the help of a secret invention that turns people into dust.
Batman (1989)
The first installment of Warner Bros.’ Batman series, Batman tells the story of the Dark Knight, Michael Keaton, as he starts his war on crime and takes on his nemesis Joker, played by Jack Nicholson. The film is directed by Tim Burton.
Batman Returns (1992)
Known for making Batman a full on franchise, Batman Returns is comical and genius. It follows Batman as he fights the Penguin who plans to kill all of Gotham City’s firstborn sons. The Catwoman also makes an appearance in his edition played by Michelle Pfeiffer.
Batman Forever (1995)
Directed by Joel Schumacher, Batman Forever is the third installment of the Warner Bros Batman films series. Michael Keaton was replaced by Val Kilmer as Bruce Wayne, who tries to stop Two-Face and Riddler in their villainous scheme to extract confidential information from all the minds in Gotham City and use it to learn Batman’s identity.
Batman and Robin (1997)
The fourth and final installment of the Warner Bros.’ series, Batman and Robin stars George Clooney as Bruce Wayne. Arnold Schwarzenegger played Victor Fries in the film.
Batman Begins (2005)
Batman Begins is the first Christopher Nolan Batman film. Starring Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne, the film is a reboot of the Batman film series after eight years. Nolan’s Batman has a darker, and a more realistic tone as compared to the previous films.
The Dark Knight (2008)
The second installment of Christopher Nolan’s Batman, played by Christian Bale is a gripping story that follows the superhero as he tries to protect his city from Joker, and accepts one of the greatest psychological and physical tests of his ability to fight injustice.
The Dark Knight Rises (2012)
According to IMDB, The Dark Knight Rises tells the story of how after eight years of exile in Joker’s reign of anarchy, Batman, with the help of the enigmatic Catwoman, is forced to save Gotham City from the brutal guerrilla terrorist Bane.
Batman V Superman (2016)
Batman now played by Ben Affleck, and the movie directed by Zack Snyder, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is the first live-action film to feature Batman and Superman together, as well as the first live-action cinematic portrayal of Wonder Woman.
Justice League (2017)
Distributed by Warner Bros., Justice League is directed by Zack Snyder and written by Chris Terrio and Joss Whedon, the film features an ensemble cast including Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Gal Gadot, Ezra Miller, Jason Momoa, Ray Fisher, Jeremy Irons, Diane Lane, Connie Nielsen, J. K. Simmons, and Ciarán Hinds.
The Batman (2022)
Batman now portrayed by Robert Pattinson, is a reboot of the franchise. The film was directed by Matt Reeves, who wrote the screenplay with Peter Craig. It follows Batman as he plans to fight Riddler, a sadistic serial killer, who begins murdering key political figures in Gotham, Batman is forced to investigate the city's hidden corruption and question his family's involvement.
